Does Michigan Have Free Roadside Assistance?

Yes, Michigan has free roadside help, but you cannot call it. MDOT runs a Safety Service Patrol at no cost to drivers. Its vans cover more than 450 miles of road in southeast Michigan, and they fix flats, add fuel and make small repairs. There is no phone number to request one. Most other free help is roadside you already paid for, through your car, your insurance or AAA.

At a glance

  • MDOT's Safety Service Patrol is free, but it finds you, you do not call it
  • Metro Detroit vans were sent out 9,184 times in fiscal year 2025, per MDOT
  • Most new Chevys carry roadside for 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • AAA Tow to Go is free on set holidays, only for drivers who should not drive
  • Free tows go to a dealer, not to your driveway or your own mechanic

A dead battery on the Lodge at night. A flat on the shoulder in February. When a car quits, most people ask the same thing first. Is there anybody who does this for free? The honest answer is yes, a little, and it is not what most people picture. Here is what is really out there, what each one will and will not do, and what to do the minute your car quits.

The Free Help Michigan Really Has

The state program is the MDOT Safety Service Patrol. In its Michigan Mobility 2050 report, MDOT says the vans help stranded drivers in busy parts of the state. They bring fuel, oil and other fluids. They change or fill tires. They clear stalled cars and junk out of the lanes, and they make minor repairs. The same report says the fleet runs on more than 450 miles of road in southeast Michigan.

It is busy, too. In fiscal year 2025, which ran from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, the same report says the Metro Detroit traffic center dispatched Safety Service Patrol vehicles 9,184 times. That center, called SEMTOC, watches about 400 freeway miles with 337 cameras, per MDOT.

Now the catch. You cannot order a van. On its West Michigan traffic center page, MDOT says the patrol is free to drivers, is not an on demand service and has no phone number to call. The vans are sent by the traffic center or find you while they patrol. That page lists hours for the Kent County patrol, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. We did not find posted hours for Metro Detroit on the MDOT pages we read on October 15, 2026. So do not plan on a free van at two in the morning.

The second free option is narrow on purpose. AAA Tow to Go gives an impaired driver and the car a free, confidential ride to a safe place within 10 miles. You do not need to be a member. It runs only on set holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas through New Year. AAA says it cannot be booked ahead and may not reach rural areas or run in bad weather. The number is (855) 286 9246. It is a safety net for a night out, not a way to get a flat fixed.

Free Roadside You May Already Have

This is where most people find their real free help. It is a benefit they already paid for and forgot about. Check these before you pay anyone.

Where it comes fromWhat it coversThe catch
MDOT Safety Service PatrolFuel, fluids, tire change or air, minor repairs, clearing the laneFree, but you cannot call it. Freeways only
New ChevroletTow to the closest Chevy dealer, jump start, flat change with your spare, unlock, emergency fuel5 years or 60,000 miles. Key costs not covered
FordTow up to 35 miles to a Ford dealer, jump start, flat change, lockout, fuel deliveryFuel is free twice in 12 months. You pay for extra tow miles and new keys
Insurance road serviceTowing, winching, flats, jumps, fuel, lockoutsOnly if it is on your policy. Paid up to your policy limit
AAA Tow to GoRide and tow up to 10 miles for an impaired driverSet holidays only. Not for breakdowns

Here is where each row comes from. Chevrolet's roadside page says roadside is included for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. EV models get tow coverage for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Ford's owner manual covers the coverage period that came with the vehicle, and the manual is where you check your own years and miles. For insurance, Michigan Farm Bureau's roadside page is a good example of how it works. You only get it if roadside is on your policy, and the payout is subject to your policy limit.

Two more places to look. Open your insurance app or your policy papers and look for road service. Then check your car's app. Chevrolet says owners with an active OnStar plan can ask for roadside from the app or the blue OnStar button. If you bought the car used, call the maker's roadside line with your VIN and ask if any coverage is left.

What to Do When You Break Down on a Detroit Freeway

Safety first, then money. The Michigan Secretary of State's driver handbook, What Every Driver Must Know, gives the basic steps. We added the money steps after them.

  • Get as far off the road as you can. Turn on your hazard lights.
  • Stay in the car with your seat belt on. The handbook says a trained pro with the right gear should handle a disabled car. Walking on a freeway is dangerous and illegal.
  • Call 911 if you are stuck in a live lane or feel unsafe. Do not wait and hope a patrol van spots you.
  • Call the roadside you already own. Your car maker, your insurer or AAA, in that order of what is free to you.
  • If none of that covers it, call a mobile mechanic. A lot of breakdowns are a battery, a belt or a flat. Those can be fixed where you sit.

One more rule protects the people who come to help. Michigan's move over law, MCL 257.653a, says drivers must slow to at least 10 mph under the limit and move over a lane for stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The state handbook says that includes tow trucks and the state's safety service patrol vans. If you pass one, give it room.

What the Free Options Will Not Do

Free roadside is built to clear the road and move the car. It is not built to fix it. That gap is where people get surprised.

A free warranty tow goes to a dealer. Chevrolet says the closest Chevy dealer. Ford says a Ford dealer within 35 miles. That is fine under warranty. But the free tow drops the car where the diagnosis bill starts, and not at the shop you trust. A tow to your own driveway or your own mechanic may cost extra, so ask before the truck leaves.

The patrol van will get you moving, not fixed. Air in a leaking tire or a splash of fuel buys you miles. It does not tell you why the battery died or why the tire went flat. Get that checked before it happens again on a worse night.

And the state vans will not come to your house. They patrol freeways. If your car will not start in your driveway, the free state option is out, and your warranty, your policy or a mobile mechanic is the call.

When Paying Beats Waiting

Sometimes the free route costs you hours, a tow you did not want and a dealer bill. Paying a mobile mechanic can be the cheaper trip. Our own rates are on our price list. The call out is a flat $150 with the diagnostic inside it, and it counts as the first hour if we do the work on that visit. Labor is $150 an hour in the day and $300 an hour between 10pm and 6am. That number is on the quote before you agree to anything.

Our roadside and no start service runs around the clock. Text a pin drop and a photo, and a real person answers. If it is a battery, our battery and starting page covers what a real charging test looks like. The best free roadside is the kind you never need, so get the weak battery or the bald tire handled before winter does it for you.

Common questions

Can I call MDOT for roadside help?

No. MDOT says its Safety Service Patrol is free but is not an on demand service, and there is no phone number to request it. If you are stuck in a live lane or feel unsafe, call 911.

What all is covered in roadside assistance?

Most plans cover a tow, a jump start, a flat change with your spare, a lockout and a little fuel. Chevrolet, Ford and Michigan Farm Bureau all list those basics. New keys and repairs are usually not covered.

How to get cheap roadside assistance?

Start with what you already have. Check your new car warranty and your insurance policy before you buy anything. If you add road service to a policy, ask your agent for the price, the tow miles and the number of calls a year.

Does my new car come with free roadside assistance?

Usually, yes. Chevrolet includes it for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Ford covers the period that came with your vehicle. Check your owner manual or warranty booklet for your exact years and miles.

Is AAA Tow to Go free?

Yes, for members and non members, but only on set holidays and only for drivers who should not drive. It takes you and your car to a safe place within 10 miles. It is not for breakdowns.

What should I do if my car breaks down on the freeway in Michigan?

Pull as far off as you can, turn on your hazards and stay in the car with your belt on, per the Secretary of State handbook. Then call your roadside plan or a mobile mechanic.
