The free code read at a parts counter is a real service and it has one flaw. A code like P0171 says the engine is running lean on bank one. It does not say whether that is a torn intake boot, a stuck valve, a weak fuel pump or a failing sensor. Buying the sensor is a coin flip.
A proper diagnostic tests the circuit. We watch live data while the engine runs, compare what the computer commands against what actually happens, and put a meter on the wire when the numbers disagree. That is the work you are paying for.
