Is $100 a Lot for an Alignment?

No. For a four wheel alignment on a normal car, $100 is a fair price. Jiffy Lube puts most four wheel jobs at $100 to $168, and Investopedia says $90 to $200. For the front wheels only, $100 is the high end, since most places charge $50 to $90. The price matters less than what you get for it. Ask for the before and after printout, and make sure worn parts get checked first.

Plain Answer

  • Four wheel alignments run about $90 to $200 in 2026, per Jiffy Lube and Investopedia
  • Front only jobs run about $50 to $100, so $100 is the top of that range
  • No before and after printout means you cannot see what you paid for
  • Many newer cars need a camera or sensor check after an alignment, per I-CAR
  • Bad roads cost the average Metro Detroit driver $2,921 a year, per TRIP
  • A Detroit city pothole claim must be filed within 45 days

We fix a lot of pothole damage in Metro Detroit, and the question comes up all the time. The car pulls to the right after a hard hit on a city street. The steering wheel sits crooked. Then a shop quotes $100 for an alignment and the driver asks us if that is a ripoff. Most of the time it is not. But the number on the sign is the least useful part of that quote. The rest of this page covers what an alignment should cost, what $100 should buy, and how to get some of it back when a city or state road did the damage.

What an Alignment Costs in 2026

Two kinds of jobs get called an alignment. A front end job sets only the front wheels. A four wheel job sets all four and lines the rear up with the front. Many newer cars need the four wheel job, per Investopedia.

Three sources give three different costs for each one. Jiffy Lube's cost page puts the national average at $50 to $168. It says a front end job is usually $50 to $75 and a four wheel job is usually $100 to $168. Investopedia's guide, updated February 16, 2026, says front end jobs start at $50, many places charge $65 to $90, and few go over $100. It says four wheel jobs start at $90 or $100 and run up to about $175 or $200. Big Chief Tire, a Jacksonville tire shop, calls about $100 the normal price on most cars.

So is $100 a lot? Not for four wheels. If the shop is only setting the front, ask why the rear is not part of it and what a four wheel job would cost.

When $100 Is Wasted Money

An alignment sets angles. It does not fix parts. If a tie rod end, a ball joint or a control arm bushing is loose, the wheel moves around that setting every time you hit a bump. You paid $100 for numbers that drift away on the drive home.

That is why the part check comes first. Big Chief Tire lists an inspection of the tires, steering and suspension as part of a proper alignment. Investopedia warns that your bill can go up a lot if the shop finds suspension damage during the job. That is not a scam by itself. A pothole that bends a wheel can also bend the part that holds it.

Wheel off.
Wheel off.
Strut mount.
Strut mount.

Our rule is simple. If the shop says a part is worn, ask to see it. A good shop will show you the play in the joint or send a photo. Then get a written price for the part before you say yes. Michigan backs you on that. Section 257.1332 of the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Act says the shop has to give you a written estimate before it starts.

Ask for the Printout, Every Time

Most cost pages skip this. A real alignment machine measures each wheel before and after the work. Big Chief Tire lists a before and after report showing the readings as part of the job. Ask for it.

The printout shows three angles for each wheel. Camber is the tilt in and out. Caster is the tilt forward and back. Toe is whether the fronts of the tires point in or out. Each reading sits next to the maker's range. Red before and green after means work was done. Green before and green after means the car may not have needed it.

No printout? Then you have no proof the car was ever on the machine. We would not pay for that, at $100 or at $40. Keep the printout in the glove box too. If a pothole did the damage, it may be your best piece of evidence. More on that below.

Newer Cars Can Cost More

If your car has lane keeping or automatic braking, the alignment price may not be the whole bill. I-CAR, the collision repair training group, says lane keeping and collision braking systems have to line up with the direction the car really travels. Its article on alignments and driver assist systems, first posted August 30, 2018 and checked again in 2025, says numerous carmakers require the system to be calibrated when an alignment is done.

The steering angle sensor is part of this. I-CAR says if that sensor is adjusted during an alignment, the front camera may think the wheel is turned. Then it may try to correct steering you never asked for. So before you say yes, ask two questions. Does my car need a calibration after this? Is it in the $100, or extra?

Detroit Roads Make This a Yearly Bill

Jiffy Lube and Investopedia both say to get an alignment about once a year. Here, the roads may decide for you. In its August 28, 2025 report, TRIP, a national transportation research group, said the average Detroit area driver loses $2,921 a year to roads that are rough, crowded and short on safety features. The Detroit Free Press reported that this is the highest cost for any urban area in Michigan.

About $600average pothole repair in 2021, per AAA

Built from the TRIP, AAA and City of Detroit figures above.

Potholes are a big part of that. In a March 2, 2022 release, AAA said 1 in 10 drivers had pothole damage bad enough to need a repair in 2021. The average repair was almost $600, and those drivers averaged two repairs each. AAA's advice after a hard hit is to watch for new noises or shakes and get the car checked soon.

Next to a $600 repair, a $100 alignment is the cheap part. A car that pulls also wears the inside or outside edge of its tires, and a new set of tires costs far more than the alignment that would have saved them.

Can the City or the State Pay for It?

Sometimes. It depends on who owns the road, and the deadlines are short. The rules are below.

State roads. MDOT's damage claim page says to file with MDOT only if the damage happened on an M, I or US route. Claims under $1,000 go to the MDOT region office where it happened, and the review usually takes at least 90 days. Claims of $1,000 or more can only be recovered through a lawsuit. MDOT also says most of these claims are denied under the state's government immunity laws.

The law behind it. Under MCL 691.1403, the road agency is only liable if it knew about the hole, or should have, and had time to fix it. The law presumes it knew if the hole was plain to see for 30 days or more. Under MCL 691.1404, notice has to go in within 120 days, with the exact location and the kind of defect.

City of Detroit streets. The city's claim form says notice must be filed no later than 45 days from the date of the accident. It goes to the Law Department claims section and must be notarized. For car damage, the form asks for your no fault insurance certificate, your registration, the page of your policy that shows your deductible, clear photos and three repair estimates or a paid receipt.

County roads go to the county road agency, per MDOT. If you are not sure who owns the road, call before you file.

  1. Right after the hit. Get to a safe spot. Take photos of the hole, with something next to it for size, and of the street sign.
  2. That week. Get the car checked. Ask for the alignment printout and a written estimate for any bent or broken part.
  3. Before 45 days. On a city street, get the notarized form in with three estimates.
  4. Before 120 days. On a state route, file with the MDOT region office.

Will you win? Maybe not. MDOT says most claims are denied. But a claim filed late is a sure loss, and the printout and estimates cost you nothing extra.

How We Handle Pothole Damage in Detroit

We come to your driveway and check the whole corner, not just the part you noticed. Struts, links, arms, tie rods, wheel bearings and the wheel itself. Every worn part gets a photo. Our suspension and steering repair is $150 an hour, with a written quote before any part is bought. We set toe where the job allows. A full rack alignment goes to a shop with the machine, and we arrange it. Our full price list is posted. For what that hourly rate buys, read our post on whether $150 an hour is expensive.

Is $100 for an alignment good?

For a four wheel alignment on a normal car, yes. Jiffy Lube puts most four wheel jobs at $100 to $168. For the front wheels only, $100 is the top of the usual range.

How do you tell if you need an alignment?

Investopedia lists the car pulling to one side, a shaking steering wheel, a wheel that sits crooked when you drive straight, and tires wearing more on one edge.

How long does a full alignment take?

About an hour, per Jiffy Lube and Big Chief Tire. It takes longer if a worn part has to be replaced first or the car needs a camera calibration.

Do you get new tires before or after an alignment?

Get the alignment with the new tires or right after. New tread on bad angles starts wearing wrong from the first mile. Fix worn steering parts first, or the setting will not hold.

Is a lifetime alignment worth it?

It can be, if you keep the car and trust the shop. Investopedia says these plans only pay off if you like the work and the shop stays in business. SlashGear notes one chain's plan does not cover the parts needed to get back to spec.

Will the city pay for pothole damage in Detroit?

Sometimes. On a city street you must file the notarized claim form within 45 days. On an M, I or US route you file with MDOT. MDOT says most claims are denied, so keep your photos and estimates.
