In a Detroit winter, wash the underside of your car within a few days after every salt storm, and do not let it go past two weeks from December through February. Wash in daylight on the warmest day of the week, not only when it hits 40 degrees. Detroit's normal high stays under 40 all of December, January and February, per the National Weather Service.
Plain Answer
- AAA puts rust repairs from salt and deicers at about $3 billion a year, near $500 a repair
- NHTSA told owners in 20 salt states, Michigan included, to wash the underside several times a winter
- Detroit's normal January high is 32.3°F, so a 40 degree rule means no washes for three months
- TÜV NORD says skip washing only below about 14°F
- Wash and wax before the first salt run, which in Detroit means late October or early November
$3 billion a year. That is about what U.S. drivers pay to fix rust caused by road salt and liquid deicers, per a AAA survey. AAA put the total at $15.4 billion over five years, with 22 million drivers hit and the average repair near $500. We see the Michigan share of that bill every winter, under cars in Metro Detroit driveways. Most of it starts with salt that sat on the car for weeks. A wash schedule built for this city stops a lot of it.

Why Detroit Breaks the 40 Degree Rule
Most car wash advice says to wash only when it is above 40 degrees. A dealer guide that ranks near the top for this question says exactly that. It also says to wash every ten days, or every five to seven days in very snowy places.
Those two rules fight each other in Detroit. The National Weather Service lists Detroit's normal daily high at 37.2°F in December, 32.3°F in January and 35.2°F in February. Those are the 1991 to 2020 normals. So if you wait for 40 degrees, you may go most of the salt season without a single wash.
The real floor is much lower. TÜV NORD, the German vehicle testing group, says to wash regularly in winter and to skip it only below about minus 10°C. That is about 14°F. A sunny 28 degree afternoon is a fine day to wash in Detroit, as long as you dry the car before dark.
Salt is not going away either. Bridge Michigan reported on January 28, 2026 that the state had ordered 199,450 tons of salt for that winter and could order more. Detroit had about 34 inches of snow by then.
The Month by Month Plan
Use this as the schedule. The snow and high columns are the National Weather Service normals for Detroit. The last column is the plan.
| Month | Snow, high | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Late Oct to early Nov | 1.9 in, 48.6°F in Nov | Full wash, underside rinse and a coat of wax before the first salt run |
| December | 8.9 in, 37.2°F | Wash the underside a few days after each storm, once the roads dry |
| January | 14.0 in, 32.3°F | Same plan, and never more than two weeks between washes |
| February | 12.5 in, 35.2°F | Same plan. Skip only the days that stay under about 14°F |
| March | 6.2 in, 45.9°F | Keep washing after every late storm |
| April | 1.5 in | One deep clean of the underside, wheel wells and floor mats |
Why wax in the fall? AAA says to wash and wax the car well before winter starts. TÜV NORD adds that wax should go on before it drops below about 10°C, or 50°F, since the product gets thick in the cold. Detroit's normal November high is 48.6°F. So the window is now, in late October.
The Underside Spray Is the Wash That Counts
A shiny hood does nothing for your brakes. Salt does its worst work under the car, where you never look. The brake lines, fuel lines and exhaust sit lowest, and the slush thrown off the tires coats them all winter.

Federal safety officials have warned about this for years. In April 2015, NHTSA closed a five year probe into rusted brake pipes on about 5 million older GM trucks and SUVs, per the Associated Press report on Fox Business. The agency logged 3,645 complaints, with 107 crash reports and 40 injury reports. It did not order a recall. It told owners in cold states to get the underside washed several times during and after the winter, and to have brake lines checked and replaced if needed.
That advice was not only for GM. MotorWeek reported that the advisory covers any maker's cars from the 2007 model year and older. Michigan is on its list of 20 states and Washington, D.C. that see more brake line rust.
So when you pick a car wash, pick the one with an underbody spray. AAA also says to pay special attention to the undercarriage, and notes that many drive through washes offer that rinse. A hose aimed under the car from each side works too, if you can do it on a warm afternoon.
How to Wash When It Is Below Freezing
A cold wash is safe if you plan for the water. Follow these steps.
- Go in daylight. AAA Mid Atlantic, in a winter wash list reported by WTOP, warns against washing near nightfall, when wet doors and locks can freeze.
- Pick the warmest day of the week. Check the forecast, and skip days that stay under about 14°F, per TÜV NORD.
- Protect the locks and seals. TÜV NORD says to rub silicone on the door seals and cover the locks with tape before the wash.
- Use car wash soap. AAA says dish soap strips wax.
- Dry the door jambs. Open and close every door, the trunk and the fuel door, and wipe the rubber dry.
- Drive it after. A short drive helps dry the brakes before the car sits overnight.
What Salt Costs When It Stays On
AAA's average rust repair is near $500. The table shows how fast the common salt jobs add up. Parts ranges and labor hours come from the MechanicRank repair guide. The labor is figured at the posted Supercanic Detroit rate of $150 an hour.
| Repair | Parts | Labor hours | Total at $150 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake line replacement | $30 to $250 | 1 to 4 | $180 to $850 |
| Muffler replacement | $90 to $320 | 0.8 to 1.6 | $210 to $560 |
| Exhaust leak repair | $30 to $250 | 1 to 2.5 | $180 to $625 |
Built from the AAA, NHTSA and Bridge Michigan figures above.
A brake line is the one that matters most. A rusted line can burst under hard braking, and the pedal goes soft or drops. The low end of that table is one short section caught early. The high end is a full set of lines on an old truck. Every wash pushes your car toward the low end.
Cold snaps make this harder. Bridge Michigan reported that salt gets less effective below 15 degrees, though it still helps traction until it dissolves. Those are also the days too cold to wash. So get the salt off on the first warmer afternoon after a cold snap.
A Fall Checklist Before the First Salt Run
- Wash, rinse the underside and wax, per AAA.
- Touch up chips and scratches that show bare metal, per AAA.
- Look at the brake lines if your car is a 2007 or older, per the NHTSA advisory. Scale that flakes off in layers is a warning.
- Swap to rubber floor mats so salty slush does not soak the carpet.
- Plan your driving. AAA says to limit trips right before, during and after storms, when salt and brine are heaviest on the road.

Is it necessary to wash salt off my car in winter?
Yes. NHTSA told owners in cold states to get the underside washed several times during and after the winter. AAA says to wash often and pay special attention to the undercarriage.
How long can you leave salt on a car?
No safety agency gives a number of days. In Detroit, aim to wash the underside within a few days after each storm, and do not let it go past two weeks in the heart of winter.
When should you wash a car in winter?
In daylight, on the warmest day of the week. AAA Mid Atlantic warns against washing near nightfall. TÜV NORD says to skip it only below about 14°F.
Is it okay to wash my car every week?
Yes. In salt season it helps. TÜV NORD says to wash about as often in winter as in summer. A dealer guide suggests every five to seven days in very snowy places.
How do I protect my car from salt in the winter?
Wash and wax before winter, touch up chips that show bare metal, wash the underside often and limit driving right around storms. Those steps come from AAA.
Does road salt work when it is very cold?
Less well. Bridge Michigan reported that salt becomes less effective below 15 degrees. It still helps traction until it dissolves.
