Weak Car Batteries Quit Near 0°F in a Detroit Winter

At 0°F a car battery has lost about 60 percent of its power, and the engine needs about twice as much power to start, per AAA. That is the temperature where weak batteries quit. A healthy battery and modern 5W or 0W oil will still start a car colder than Detroit Metro Airport has been in 31 winters. Detroit drops to 0°F or below about 3 nights a winter.

Plain Answer

  • At 32°F a battery loses about 35 percent of its power and the engine needs 1.5 times as much to start, per AAA
  • Battery cold cranking amps are rated at 0°F, so that number on the label is your cold start budget
  • 5W oil is rated to crank at 22 below zero. The coldest night at Detroit Metro Airport since 1995 was 15 below
  • Detroit averaged 118 nights a winter at or below freezing and 3.3 at or below 0°F from 1995 to 2026, per NOAA data
  • Get the battery tested at three years old and every year after, per AAA

60 percent. That is how much power a car battery has lost at 0°F, per AAA Club Alliance. At the same time, the engine needs about twice as much power to turn over. A battery with 40 percent left, asked to do double the work, is where most Detroit no starts come from. We fix those in driveways every winter, and we counted every cold night at Detroit Metro Airport for the last 31 winters to see how often that happens here.

Green is the power a battery still has. Black is the power the engine asks for. The 32°F and 0°F figures are AAA's. The warm row is a full strength battery, the starting point for both.

The Battery Gives Out Before the Oil Does

Cold slows the chemistry inside a lead acid battery. Cold also thickens engine oil, so the starter has to push harder through it. Both problems land on the same morning. At 32°F a battery loses about 35 percent of its power while the engine needs 1.5 times as much to start, per the same AAA report. During one January 2026 cold snap, AAA in Ohio took more than 11,000 battery calls in four days.

The battery label tells you how ready it is. Cold cranking amps, or CCA, is the current a new, fully charged battery can push for 30 seconds at 0°F while holding at least 7.2 volts, per Optima. So the rating is built around a Detroit January morning. An old battery no longer makes its label number. That gap is what a load test measures.

The oil is rarely the limit here. The W in 5W or 0W means winter. Under the SAE J300 standard, each winter grade has to pass a cold cranking test at a set temperature.

Oil gradeCranking test temperatureIn Fahrenheit
0W35 below zero °C31 below zero
5W30 below zero °C22 below zero
10W25 below zero °C13 below zero
15W20 below zero °C4 below zero
20W15 below zero °C5°F

The coldest night at Detroit Metro Airport from 1995 to 2026 was 15 below zero, on January 16, 2009, in NOAA's daily records. A 0W or 5W oil is rated to crank colder than that. A 15W or 20W oil is another story. If an older car came with a heavy oil, ask what grade the owner's manual allows for winter.

So there is no single temperature where every car stops. A strong battery and the right oil will start a gas car on the coldest night Detroit has seen in decades. A tired battery can fail at 32°F.

How Often Detroit Gets Cold Enough to Matter

The table counts nights at Detroit Metro Airport by how low the temperature went. It covers 31 winters, from July 1995 to June 2026, using the daily lows NOAA publishes through its NOWData tool. The battery figures in the last column are AAA's.

Low at or belowNights in an average winterWinters with at least oneWhat it means for a battery
32°F11831 of 31About 35 percent weaker, 1.5 times the load
20°F43.531 of 31Between the two AAA marks
10°F15.330 of 31Close to the 0°F mark
0°F3.324 of 31About 60 percent weaker, twice the load
10 below0.36 of 31Colder than the CCA test itself

Averages hide the bad years. The winter of 2013 to 2014 had 17 nights at or below 0°F, with a low of 14 below on January 6, 2014. Last winter, 2025 to 2026, had 5 such nights and bottomed out at 10 below on January 24, 2026. One mild winter tells you nothing about the next one.

What to Do in the Driveway on a Cold Morning

  1. Turn everything off. Heater fan, lights, radio and the rear defrost all pull from the same battery. Give the starter all of it.
  2. Crank for about 10 seconds, then stop. Champion says longer than that risks overheating the starter or flooding the engine. Wait a few minutes before the next try.
  3. Listen to the sound. A slow, dragging crank points at the battery. One sharp click and nothing usually points at the starter or a bad cable end. A normal crank with no start points at fuel or spark.
  4. Jump it, then get it tested. A jump gets you moving. It does not tell you if the battery can hold a charge, or if the alternator is charging it.
  5. Never warm it up in an attached garage. The CDC says never run a car inside a garage attached to a house, even with the door open. More than 400 Americans die each year from carbon monoxide that is not linked to fires.
  6. Plug in a block heater if you have one. Natural Resources Canada says a timer set for two hours before you leave is usually enough. At about 4 below zero, it found a block heater can improve fuel economy by as much as 10 percent.

Short trips make all of this worse. Short winter drives never fully recharge a battery after a cold start. Then the next morning starts from behind.

Test the Battery Before December

The cheapest fix is the one done in October or November. AAA tells drivers to have a battery tested once it is three years old, and every year after that, per WHYY's report on AAA's advice. A load test shows how much of its cold cranking rating the battery can still deliver. A charging test shows if the alternator is keeping up.

If the test is borderline, replace it before the first night near 0°F. A battery that barely passes on a mild day will be in worse shape at 0°F, when it is down 60 percent and the engine wants twice the power.

We do this work where the car sits. Our posted call out is $150, and the diagnostic is inside that fee. You get the number before any part goes in. See our battery, starter and alternator service, our no start help, and the full price list. Then read our post on winter tires for Detroit ice.

What temperature should you not start your car at?

There is no such temperature for a healthy gas car in Detroit. 5W oil is rated to crank at 22 below zero under SAE J300, and the coldest night at Detroit Metro Airport from 1995 to 2026 was 15 below. The real limit is the battery, which has lost about 60 percent of its power at 0°F, per AAA.

Why does my car not start in cold weather?

Most of the time it is the battery. At 0°F a battery is about 60 percent weaker while the engine needs about twice the power to start, per AAA. Thick oil and a worn starter or loose cable end add to the load.

Is it okay to cold start your car?

Yes. Cars are built for it. Natural Resources Canada says a cold engine burns more fuel and makes more emissions in its first minutes, so drive gently until it warms up. Never let it idle in an attached garage.

If my car will not start in the cold, will it start when it warms up?

Often it will, because a battery gets more of its power back as it warms. That does not mean the battery is fine. A battery that fails at 20°F will fail again on the next cold night, so get it load tested.

What CCA battery do I need for a Detroit winter?

Use at least the CCA your owner's manual lists. CCA is rated at 0°F, per Optima, and Detroit sees 0°F or colder in most winters. Optima says extra cranking amps past that are usually not needed. Less than the manual lists is a gamble.

Does a block heater help in Detroit?

On the few nights near 0°F or below, yes. Natural Resources Canada says two hours on a timer is usually enough. Detroit averaged 0.3 nights a winter at 10 below or colder from 1995 to 2026, so most cars here get by without one.
